Why should parents of children with disabilities attend conferences?

by: Daniel Martinez

1. To network: Parents connecting with other parents can get together and share their experiences with one another, and parents can also connect with professionals in the field who can be good contacts to know.

2. To expand their knowledge and find solutions to problems: Parents with questions can learn about new techniques, new types of equipment, published & unpublished data, with the added advantage that parents may meet professionals who could have solutions, suggestions, ideas to resolve situations that the parents may be trying to solve.

3. To present ideas to others: Sharing ideas with other parents regarding parenting skills can provide opportunities to help other parents in need, and it can also open opportunities to expand perspectives as thought provoking questions may be asked.

Questions and Answers

Q: Can my child attend the convention?

A. Very few conventions encourage children to attend seminars as the presentations may not be targeting children as the audience.

A. Some conventions may offer child care services, and some parents opt for taking turns attending seminars of interest, while the other parent provides child care.

Q: Are conventions expensive?

A. Funding travel, hospitality, meals, and registrations can add up to be expensive. Some families have opted to carpool to conventions, share rooms, and plan in advance to attend conventions, so that they may save the funds to attend.

A. Most convention programs offer a limited amount of grants to families who apply and qualify for assistance.
